Theatre show!
« on: September 25, 2017, 08:00:10 pm » [00000000]
Hi all!

I write, direct and produce a community theatre show for 6-26 year olds every year. I've picked the theme of 'Spies' for next year's show but so far, I have no ideas on what to write.

Does anyone have any good eras/locations/ideas that would work? Keeping in mind the age range of the cast.

Thanks in advance! :)

I think they left out the Creativity trait/perk during my character creation process.

Meanwhile, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a really enjoyable 'spy' show for me.

Maybe you can get some ideas there.

How about the two smart spies (one N.Korean and one US) who, amid the blustering rhetoric of both leaders, hauled the world back from nuclear catastrophe simply by exercising a little wisdom?

Got to be a comedy, to make the topic palatable to the indicated age range, but easily caring a moral caution as well. Maybe both spies have kids too - thus involving all ages - as well as adding personal motive to the actions of the main protagonists.

Might be too provocative a tale for a Community Theater in the US though? You'd get away with it here though.

I love the Man From U.N.C.L.E! I'd forgotten about that! :)

Interesting idea Mihail! I like it. I'm in Australia, so not too worried about being too P.C.

I've been watching 'Archer' and the 'Austin Powers' movies for some inspiration but haven't gotten too far yet!

Lol... What a nightmare! 6 to 26 is quite complicated.

Possible story: there is a treasure somewhere (maybe a pirate treasure) and two men who are rivals have a map, but each map has missing hints... Each one of them hire a spy to investigate what the other one knows.

The two spies end up becoming friends and deceive their bosses with false hints and plan to keep the treasure for themselves.

The final scene is somehow a deus ex machina... different circumstances lead all of them to find the treasure all at once...
The treasure finally was a genie who grants 3 wishes.

As in all the 3 wishes tales the genie is tricky and the 4 men decide to finally collaborate and think of the best wish possible.... Of course the wish goes wrong so they try to fix it with a second wish... Which makes everything even worst... And the third wish is simply to cancel the effects of the 2 previous wishes.

And finally a short scene in which the 4 men understand that they didn't need the treasure... And each one of them names what is the thing they value the most... But they are not material things.

Comedy, spies, a genie, pirate stories, a treasure and some sort of final morale.

That's an interesting plot line haha!

You managed to incorporate Genies and Pirates (P.S. Pirates was the show's theme this year!)

I was definitely thinking a James Bond style tale, with a Austin Powers-style baddie, with the humour of Archer thrown in there.

I like the idea of a good guy being captured by the seemingly powerful villain. Then the captured good guy starts psychologically messing with the villain. Something like this:

Villain: ...And then I'll activate the Death Ray-
Captive: (muttering) Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you...
Villain: What? Why?
Captive: Oh, no. Nothing. Never mind... I probably shouldn't be helping you...
Villain: No, no! Go ahead!

etc.

Thoughts?
